Identification Information

You must be able to provide official proof of identification and ownership, lack will result in delays in getting your friend home. Providing proof as the rightful owner, protects you and your pet. Regardless, you will be asked for it from any responsible person that may have found your pet. You will definitely be asked for it from the authorities.

Check the shelters in Person

It is imperative that you visit your local shelters in person to see if your pet has been turned in. Take a descriptive picture of your pet with you and be prepared to leave it. Do not depend on the shelter staff on getting back to you. They are often overwhelmed, the sheer volume of lost and found reports they are required to deal with often exceeds their staffing. You really need to return to the shelters regularly to look for yourself. Commonly the shelter’s log entry does not match your verbal description. You may describe your pet as “tan” and the shelter may have logged in a found pet as “light brown”.

Take along your dog’s favorite toy

.. or another noise that makes him come running. Dogs can hear sounds from very far away and may come if they hear a comforting sound! Shaking a treat bag or something else that your is familiar with can definitely help. If your dog has a special dog buddy, consider bringing them dog along to help find their missing friend.

Does your dog likes to chase.

They will always come back to where you were last. Leave your jacket,, towel, socks or something of yours for them to come back to. Don’t just pick up everything and leave looking for them, because when they come back and there is nothing there, they will head out to start looking for you and will probably be afraid. Usually you will find them on your coat when you return.

Your scent travels a long way.

If you have an idea of what area the dog is in. I suggest camping out on the edge of that area in such a manner that the wind carries the owners scent into the area. That way, if the dog is in there within close proximity they will pick up the scent and follow it to the owner.

The longer you are present the more scent you leave. If you have helpers , consider having them wear something of the owners, especially if it is a shy dog.

Call Local Veterinarian

Call your neighborhood veterinarians. People often leave lost and found reports with them or bring injured strays to them.

OFFER A REWARD

Offering a reward does help get people involved. Be cautious, however, do not arrange to meet people in out-of-the-way places and do not hand over any reward money unless you have your pet in your hands.

Consider setting a humane trap

Inside cats that “escape” to the outdoors are very likely to be hiding close by. Their instinct when frightened is not to reveal themselves, so they will not meow or come to you. The only way to get them back may be to trap them. Some local humane societies and rescues on my links page will lend or rent humane traps. Bait with some strong-smelling food. Monitor trap often. If left overnight, do not be surprised if you catch a raccoon or someone else’s cat!

For Cats

If you have lost a cat be sure to put out food and something that has a strong scent and smells like home. Ie: Litter box, cat bed, something you have been wearing. They have a strong sense of smell and that can sometimes help bring them home.

Pet-FInding Services

Be wary of so-called “pet-finding” services that may contact you and offer to help find your pet for a fee!.

Check back regularly.

Revisit this site and the others that you have subscribed. REGULARLY. Do not assume that they will automatically get back to you. uo not assume that because your pet was wearing an identification tag, that you will be contacted. Collars may be removed or fall off.

DO NOT GIVE UP!

Even when you have little hope left, don’t stop searching. Animals who have been lost for months have been reunited with their owners. Be persistent. Keep visiting your shelter and checking with area businesses where you have placed signs.

Thinking the unthinkable
